Model Elyse Knowles and partner Josh Barker have sold their South Melbourne investment property for an undisclosed sum above asking price.
The pair, who became public faces after winning the 2017 season of The Block, snagged the dated two-bedroom terrace at 13 Mountain St in 2018 for $1.42m.
But the home was put up for sale in May after neighbours shot down the couple’s plans to extend and renovate the property into their dream home.
It’s understood the property sold last Thursday for an undisclosed price above the $1.6m asking price.
Belle Property Albert Park director David Wood said a local family had purchased the home prior to auction and planned to go ahead with the couple’s renovation plans.
“They’re planning to do the renovation, but not immediately, they really liked the renovation,” Mr Wood said.
Planning permits submitted to Port Phillip Council had flagged partially demolishing the house and adding a basement, rooftop terrace and garden.
When lodged, a total of 18 objections were filed by local residents, with one telling the Herald Sun the design didn’t suit the “modest working-class” street.
Earlier this year, Barker told the Herald Sun the two-year delay and hassle of going to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal prompted them to sell up.
The pair, who welcomed their first child in February, now plan to stay in Byron Bay, where they have lived since 2019.
“We were going to stay there, it was going to be where we were going to live and with all the VCAT stuff that happened … it just so happens we moved to Byron Bay and we’re not going to come back,” he said.
Barker singled out Port Phillip Council for “dragging its feet” to approve the plans, even after the tribunal gave them the green light.
He said if the new buyer were to continue with the project they would have “one of the best, if not the best home in the street”, adding that it would also have incredible views of the city.
“It’ll be the only house in the street with a rooftop terrace. The view it has deserves a terrace,” Barker said.
Mr Wood said the reality TV star duo were “happy with the result”.
Belle Property Albert Park director David Wood had the listing and was contacted for comment.
