He’s run alongside some of the biggest names in football, but former AFL umpire Scott McLaren’s property journey started with humble beginnings.

“It was in Wordsworth St, Moonee Ponds — not the rich end. It was a three-bedroom, one-bathroom California bungalow. We were there for five years but after we had the twins (Hannah and Jack, now 20) we just needed something bigger.”

“We’re looking for something close to the beach (after just selling 1 Lambourne St, Surrey Hills, home of 18 years). We bought (the Surrey Hills house) pretty much when it had just been fully renovated. We had young three-year-old twins at the time. It’s a great location, one of the highest points in Melbourne. You can see from the bay to the city … and have a cocktail and watch the fireworks on New Year’s Eve. (Now we want) something that is low maintenance. A nice little pool or spa out the back would be nice and just having those separate living areas — the kids are adults now but if they could have their own space for friends or girlfriends, boyfriends, so we’re not driving each other crazy.”

AFL umpire Scott McLaren announces his retirement. His last game will be the twilight game on Sunday.

Scott McLaren was one of the AFL’s most high-profile umpires.

“It would be somewhere warmer — the Melbourne winters are starting to wear me down. I’d move somewhere tropical, anything sort of QLD, NSW — that way. I don’t think I could go through the stress of a build, I just like to step into something that is all there and done. We’d love to get something modern. We’ve lived in a California bungalow all our lives (and we like modern style).”
