A Grange home owned by the same family for 50 years has been snapped up for $160,000 more than expected at its highly anticipated auction, setting a new record price for its street.
The three-bedroom house at 6 Tandanya Ave fetched $1.11 million under the hammer on Saturday – $100,000 more than the street’s top sale, which was set in 2018 by No. 18.
Property records show they are the only two houses in the street to have sold for more than $1 million.
Selling agent Nick Beneke, of Ray White Glenelg, said the owners were “gobsmacked” by the result given they were expecting the house to sell for around $950,000.
“After last year where we were the most unsure we’ve ever been, we are now in the best selling market on record,” he said.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many people wanting to buy property, the demand is ridiculous.”
Mr Beneke said a range of buyers showed interest in the property throughout its two-and-a-half week auction campaign.
“We had every type of buyer through, from families wanting to live in it as is, others wanting to do a big renovation and some that were thinking of knocking down the house and rebuilding,” he said.
“We had 35 registered bidders, which was the most in the country for Ray White on Saturday.
“I’ve never had that many registrations.”
He said a local family bought the property – much to the delight of the owners, who built the house 56 years ago as a family home.
“The buyers have actually got a similar property in the western suburbs but wanted to live closer to the beach,” he said.
“With this one here, it was a little bit further back from the beach so it’s probably in more people’s price range and you don’t get much traffic through there, it’s a nice quiet little pocket.”
